"Dementia - Beyond the Disease"

This presentation will identify how to work with individuals with dementia and their families.   It will discuss the types and causes of dementia; including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and less common types and causes.  The speaker will also cover the risk factors for getting Dementia including advancing age, family history, genetic, and lifestyle choices.  

Mary Knapp has been Director of Health Services at Foulkeways at Gwynedd since 2008. She is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and University of Pennsylvania masters prepared Nurse Practitioner.

She served as the American Nurses Association (ANA) nurse representative for the Joint Commission of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Long Term Care (LTC) Professional Technical Advisory Committee which  advised JCAHO on LTC standards of care..

Mary was appointed a Fellow to the American Academy of Nursing, the most prestigious nursing organization and she has almost fifty publications related to Medicare and Geriatrics.

She has received awards from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for serving on the Multistate Nursing Home Case Mix and Quality Demonstration Project, Nurses Clinical Panel, and the Advisory Panel on the Development of a Uniform Needs Assessment Instrument for Discharge Planning.
